A 10-Point Plan for Companies (Without Being Overwhelmed)

MyFitnessPal Security Breach]

Data of more than 150 million users of a well-known fitness and dietary app called “MyFitnessPal” had been hacked on March 29, 2918. Users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords were stolen. After the company noticed that an unauthorized person had accessed the data on February, they immediately started to notify their users through in-app messaging and emails. The company then urged the users to change their passwords immediately. Unfortunately, the identity of the hacker/s, who stole the data of millions of users is still unknown.

Under Armour, MyFitnessPal’s parent company, claimed that none of the users’ financial information were affected by the breach of data. The damage of the data breach is considered moderate since the company does not require any government-issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers or social security numbers. Currently, the company is working on figuring out how the hackers had the ability to get into their system without being noticed.

And although having your fitness and dietary progress stolen by a hacker may seem like it’s not much of a big deal, it still holds more power if you look at the bigger picture. For instance, the app has the capability to know the precise performance and location of its users. Meaning, if someone else has access to a user’s account, they will be able to know where exactly a user is and how fast the user is going. The users are then in potential danger and can be tracked by whoever holds their data.

Getting Your Data Secured

This is an important reminder that any personal data can be easily hacked in this age of modern technology. In order to secure their private data, listed below are some of the things that individuals can do in order to secure their own private data.

1. Using Complex Passwords

While some people may prefer generic and easy password, it is still best to at least put an effort in setting your passwords. Though it is a very small detail, hackers may still end up having a hard time in cracking your password if you set it into a difficult one, thus protecting your account until the issue is fixed.

2. Knowing the App’s Terms and Services Conditions

While most people like to skip on reading the terms and services, it is still of great importance for the users to have knowledge about what the company plans on doing with the data that they share with the app. It is very important that the users are aware of the capabilities of the app itself.

While data breaches like these are becoming more common in this age of technology and companies have the ability to protect its users, it is still important that users take precautionary measures in protecting their data.
